I Don’t Mind If You Patronize Me

I remember learning about the renaissance artists who had patrons to support them so they can just do what they do: paint, sculpt, write, invent, explore. That was their job, to just create, maybe I’m romanticizing it but that was the dream. I wondered if that still existed today, in the way I imagined it did back then. Not making a living by selling your art, or creating something that someone has commissioned you to do, but just for being, thinking, living, existing. And I don’t define art strictly in the terms of painting, writing, or sculpting or anything that most people would describe as “art”. I mean creating and art in the way that we use our mind and imaginations to think of are all creators, artists and explorers.

I once told my brother, and other people too, that I wish someone would patronize me – meaning to be a patron of, not the condescending version. And here I am just existing, creating.
